Another parent/teacher conference session has been fulfilled. I had 95% attendance of parents, a first for me. Parents were anxious to get their children's report cards and assess the damage. Most were pleasantly pleased and none surprised. I tried my best to be encouraging and positive. Each student is someone's child. I can vividly remember parent/teacher conferences with my own children's teachers. Some of those were not positive nor pleasant, but not necessarily the fault of my children. I vowed that I would never make a parent sit through 15 minutes of unflattering words. I do not lie to parents, but find kinder ways of saying things when I need to be more firm. Instead of saying, "Your child is constanly out of his seat and never shuts up." I would say, "Your child is very excited about school and is eager to volunteer answers all the time. We are channeling that energy into positive directions." The parent, who already knows what his or her child is like, is pleased, but understands the message.

Oh, please, do share. I can remember getting the "-" in the "able to perform work without bothering others" all through 2nd grade. I think she hated me because I pointed out to her that her telling the class that a liquid was anything you pour was incorrect because you pour cereal from a box and it's not a liquid.
Heidi, I can totally see you correcting the teacher! LOL. I used to get bad marks in "practices self control" because I loved talking out of turn.
